The Marcy Recumbent Mag Cycle exercise bike is a product from Impex Fitness, which has produced different kinds of gym and exercise equipment since 1959. This cardio equipment, also commonly described as Marcy ME709, is very popular with people that are on a small budget, and yet want to have a decent exercise bike at home to help get rid of their excess weight. This equipment is also used by many people who want to do exercise while they are recovering from injuries.
The Marcy ME709 may be relatively inexpensive equipment, but it is by no means cheap. It is one of the most popular exercise bikes in its class at both Amazon as well as Wal-Mart with very good reviews. This bike is well known to be very comfortable, and that means you can enjoy long workouts without getting to feel tired easily. Having said that, if you are looking for an exercise bike for serious muscular trainings, than this bike may not be what you are looking for. It comes with only basic features, and definitely does not have all the bells and whistles that you can find on those high end models.
Before you read the details of my Marcy Recumbent Mag Cycle ME709 Review, you may want to first watch the below short video presentation on the features overview:
The Marcy ME709 offers 8 levels of easy-to-adjust preset magnetic resistance that provides an ultra smooth and quite workout. The 8-level means that you can easily select the intensity of the workout that suits your current stamina.
The resistance by this machine is awesome. From some reviewers who were normally on a higher resistance, they will start to sweat after only 10 minutes workout on a resistance 2 with the Marcy Recumbent Mag. However, there are also some that complained that they only experienced significant resistance after level 7. For this group, I would recommend that they should consider upgrading their machine to one that offers more strenuous workout options.
If your main focus is for cardiovascular effect, I would say that this machine will serve its purpose well with 8 levels of resistance.
The display console is operated by two AA sized batteries. The computer turns ON automatically when exercise begins, and will turn OFF 4 minutes after exercise ends.
There are 4 essential information that are displayed on the console. They are speed, distance, time and calorie burnt. There is also a “scan” function, whereby the display will continuously rotate through all functions, and each display will hold for 4 seconds before moving on to the next.
What I like about this console is that it comes with an extra large display font, occupying about half the size of the console itself. This provides extremely good readability, especially during workouts. You are tired and sweating, but if you want to, you can still easily read off how much distance you have covered or calories burnt before the display jumps to show the next function.
You can set a time or distance you target to complete, and the machine will alert you once you have achieved your goal. This helps a lot to ease off your mind to consistently check on the status of your workout. You can therefore enjoy reading your magazine or listening to your favourite music while pedalling away with no worries of over or under doing your exercise.
One point to note on the calorie counter; as it cannot track the resistance level that is used, it will not very accurately show you the exact amount of calorie burnt during the workout. Most of the reviewers suggested discounting 20% off the reading as a rule of thumb to get the average calorie burnt. Well, for a budget machine, I would not mind this small inaccuracy though. Without accurate calorie burnt information should not be an excuse not to exercise and achieve anyone’s weight lose target anyway! But if you must track an accurate calorie burn, you could always wear an exercise heart rate monitor during your workout.
Recumbent exercise bikes are expected to be more comfortable as compared to upright ones. The Marcy Recumbent Mag Cycle ME709 will not disappoint you in this aspect. The thick and high density foam used for its seat and back support will hold your hip in a very comfortable recline position. This is very important as during the entire workout, the weight and pressure from the body will be on the hips and knees. Prolonged workout without a comfortable seat may cause tremendous stress on your hip and knee.
The very generous seat space will also have no problem at all to accommodate anyone, even with bigger sizes than usual. The height of the side handlers next to the seat allows your hands to hold onto it comfortably.
For a comfortable ride, the Marcy ME709 offers counterbalanced pedals and adjustable foot straps to provide great support for your foot. It ensures your foot fits and rests firmly on the pedal even during the hardest of workouts to avoid any muscle strain.
Heart Rate Monitor
There is no built-in heart rate monitor on the Marcy ME709. For those that want to monitor their heartbeat during workout, get a portable heart rate monitor could be a good solution.
Like what I have mentioned in the beginning, there are no bells and whistles or any fanciful stuff on the Marcy ME709. There are no preset program workouts built into the computer. Therefore, you have complete freedom to decide your own pace and rhythm through every workout session. This may not be a big problem for some users, as preset programs may not suit everybody after all.
This lightweight exercise bike has a fairly small footprint, measuring 55 x 40 x 25 inches (W X H X D) and weighs 66 pounds. As it comes with transport wheels, it is very easy to move between rooms. This bike has no problem to go into any standard car boot, in case you are thinking of transporting it by car.
Much thought has been put into the design of the Marcy ME709 to cater for people with different sizes. The seat can be adjusted forward to be closer to the pedals for smaller build users. A 5’1” lady reviewer mentioned that she has no problem using this machine comfortably. Anyone shorter than that, well, may need to stuff one or two supporting pillows at the back in order to have a more enjoyable workout.
The recommended weight capacity for this machine mentioned by a few resources suggested 300 pounds. However, there was a user who started off at 400 pounds. So, I guess there may not be any specific weight limits.
The step through frame design provides a very easy entry and exit to the machine. This is extremely convenient for people with limited mobility in their legs.
The magnetic resistance system guarantees a very smooth and quiet workout. This means that you can do your workout late into the night without disturbing anyone, or even in your baby’s room while watching your cutie to sleep peacefully.
There is no additional accessory that comes along with the Marcy ME709.
Many consumers like the easy setup of this machine. Many of them can easily put it together by one person within an hour. They also like the very smooth, quiet and ultra comfortable use of the bike.
The design looks solid, with small footprint and built-in wheels that make moving around and storage to be very convenient.
This is a value-for-money bike that provides practical features with no frills.
The height adjustment is located at the bottom of the bike, and it can only be adjusted when you are out of the seat. It is made such that the entire seat assembly slides forwards or backwards. Compared to some expensive models that only the seat moves, the Marcy ME709 needs more effort and inconvenience to adjust. If there is only one user than it’s not a big deal, but if you are sharing the bike with someone else that has a very different build as you, than it will become a hassle to adjust the seat assembly every time each of you wants to use the bike.
In addition, the height adjustment holes are too far apart, which sometimes doesn’t allow for a precise fit.
There is some feedback that because the bike is so lightweight, it sometimes wobble when the pedalling is hard and rapid.
The ratings at both Amazon and Wal-Mart are above 4.5 for nearly 300 and over 500 customer reviews respectively. Despite the imperfections, the Marcy ME709 is still an excellent value-for-money machine ideal for cardio workouts.
The Mercy ME709 Recumbent Mag Cycle is one of the most reasonably priced in its class of exercise bikes. Comparing its features and quality to other brands, it is a real bargain. Amazon usually has the best price.
